If you must keep up with the latest technology, there are a host of smart sites that will completely wire you up with the latest product info, previews and test results.

Frankly, however, you could stop trying so hard. I know that sounds strange from someone who covers tech for a living. But tech writers’ homes usually aren't littered with gadgets. Why? Because most new technology winds up disappointing the savvy consumer.

You’re better off waiting to see if new gizmos stand the test of time -- and buying accordingly. Early adapters are the guinea pigs of the tech industry. Technology is more reliable, better developed, easier to use and much cheaper when it’s well-established.

Here’s an example of something you shouldn’t grab right now: tablet computers and larger-sized smartphones like the Apple iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab and Dell Streak. No one knows which format will end up winning the war. You're better off with a smaller smartphone and a cheap laptop for now.

So stay informed -- there are plenty of places to get the latest and best info -- and wait it out. You’ll be glad you did. It doesn’t matter if you’re the first to get it; what matters is waiting for the best.
